Look at    and New Entrance Sign Construction

As you look at the above picture you see a new big sign identifying the Zoo. The committee felt that Charles needed someting to announce his favorite place!

So the committee decided to design, build, and install an appropriate sign.

Our ever talented artist, Mark Greenaway, came up with this design. Mark teamed with Burton Johnson of our local THESTEELXBURT company to construct the sign of steel (which came in at 670#). Full Spectrum donated & applied the powder coatings. Mike Smith (Smith Engr) donated the engineering work. Mark did the final painting.

The sign has been installed and dedicated.. Click on the Statue Construction Progess above to see photos of the Sign construction and installation.

This is the finished sign. Note the animals in the ZOO letters and in the "leaves" of the tree.

Link to the Zoo website

The local Atascadero Zoo was established in 1955 by Charles Paddock, a county park ranger who nursed wild animals back to health.  Over the years the Zoo grew and In 1979, the City of Atascadero was incorporated and the city took over management of the Zoo.

The Zoo took on the official name of “The Charles Paddock Zoo” in 1980, in memory of its founder. The zoo is fully accredited , exhibiting over 100 animals on 5 park-like acres within the Atascadero Lake Park.

As a tribute to Charles Paddock, and in memory of his son, on the upcoming 60th anniversary of the Zoo, a life-size bronze statue of the founder was installed at the entrance, thanks to our many donors.

Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredits Charles Paddock (item in the Paso Robles Daily News)

The Association of Zoos & Aquariums, or AZA, this week (March 30, 2015) announced that the Charles Paddock Zoo in Atascadero was granted accreditation by AZA’s independent Accreditation Commission.

“Only zoos and aquariums that meet the highest standards are accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums,” said AZA President and CEO Jim Maddy. “The community should take great pride in knowing that the Charles Paddock Zoo is a proven leader in the care and conservation of wildlife, and in inspiring people to take action to protect the natural world.”
